Purpose statement:

A Total Entry Controller is responsible for the duties regarding pre-entry procedures, entry into and exit from the confined space, maintaining communications and initiating and controlling emergency procedures.
A Total Safety Fire Watcher is the person or persons responsible for continuously observing hot work activity for the detection of, and response to, fires during hot work operations. A fire watcher has the authority to stop work if necessary and conduct essential steps for restoring safe conditions within the hot work area.

Duties And Responsibilities

Quality, Health, Safety & Environment

  • To ensure as far as is reasonably practicable, ensure personal health and safety and health and safety of others.

  • Participate in Total Safety QHSE & LPS awareness events and contribute to the improvement of the QHSE Management System & LPS.

  • Strict adherence to Total Safety Core Values & Behaviours.

  • Employee should contact his/her line manager with any concerns regarding any issues, concerns or suggestions for improvement.


Duties and Responsibilities – Entry Controller

  • Attend client-specific training programmes to fully understand standby safety duties before the commencement of a project, turnaround, or outage.

  • Perform standby safety attendant duties with full attentiveness, ensuring the safety of all workers within the work location at all times.

  • Continuously monitor activities inside and outside the work area to ensure it remains safe for entrants to stay within the area.

  • Ensure ongoing communication with workers in the work area.

  • Conduct equipment checks before commencing work activities to ensure all equipment is in good working order.

  • Follow the Line Manager’s instructions and maintain an accurate count or register of all workers in the area.

  • Observe and assist with emergency site safety procedures as required.

  • Maintain a full understanding of client site emergency response procedures.

  • Immediately raise the alarm for any safety issues to ensure the protection of all workers within the work location.


Duties and Responsibilities – Fire Watcher

  • Attend client specific training programmes to fully understand standby safety duties before the commencement of a project, turnaround, or outage.

  • Perform Fire Watcher duties with full attentiveness, ensuring the safety of all workers within the work location at all times.

  • Continuously monitor activities inside and outside the work area to ensure it remains safe for entrants to stay within the area.

  • Ensure ongoing communication with workers in the work area.

  • Continuously assess th Monitor hot work activities and enforce fire safety standards.

  • Continuously assess the workspace and ensure flammable materials are kept away from ignition sources.

  • Immediately raise the alarm for any safety issues to ensure the protection of all workers within the work location.


Product & Legislation Awareness

  • Good understanding of HSE guidelines in respect of Confined Space, Working at Height, Fire Safety and associated training requirements applicable to clients and contractors.


When it is considered necessary or appropriate by management you may be required to carry out any duties considered within your skill and competence to assist the smooth running of the business.

  • Compliance with the requirements of the QOHSE & LPS management system.

  • Involvement and participation in Daily Coordination & Toolbox Talk meetings (when site based).

  • Successful completion of site inductions.

Qualifications and skills

  • *Confined Space training (City & Guilds/ECiTB)

  • *Fire Marshall Training (refreshed every three years)

  • *Internal QHSE induction training

  • Client specific standby attendant training

  • Good leadership, organisation, and management skills

  • Good oral and written communication skills

  • Able to work alone or as part of a team

  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to multi-task

  • Ability to respond to high-stress emergencies efficiently and in a timely manner

*Training can be supplied by Total Safety

Physical and additonal requirements

  • The ability to wear PPE correctly for a portion of the working day

  • Ability to work in all weather conditions

  • Ability to see and response to dangerous situations

  • Ability to carry out manual handling operations
